The Complete Car Interior Cleaning Guide
Clean your car's interior in the right order, from decluttering and vacuuming to plastics, leather, fabric and glass, without damaging any surface.

A clean interior changes how a car feels every time you get in. The secret to doing it well is the order. Work top to bottom and dry to wet, so you never re-dirty a surface you already cleaned.
1. Declutter
Remove everything that does not belong: trash, loose items, child seats if possible, and the floor mats. It is impossible to clean around clutter properly.
2. Dry dusting and air
Use a soft detailing brush on vents, seams, buttons and the gaps around the console, ideally with a vacuum nozzle right behind it. Compressed air helps blow debris out of tight spaces and from under seats toward the floor.
3. Vacuum thoroughly
Move the seats fully forward and back to reach the rails and carpet underneath. Use a crevice tool along seat seams and a brush tool on carpet to lift embedded dirt. Vacuum the trunk too.
4. Hard surfaces
Spray an interior cleaner onto a microfiber towel, not directly onto surfaces near electronics. Wipe the dashboard, console, door panels and steering wheel. Use a soft brush on textured plastics. Follow with a non-greasy UV protectant.
5. Seats
Leather gets a dedicated leather cleaner and a soft brush, then a conditioner. Fabric seats can be treated with an upholstery cleaner and, for deeper stains, hot water extraction or steam.
6. Carpets and mats
Treat stains, agitate with a brush, and extract or blot. Rubber mats can be scrubbed and rinsed; carpet mats can be shampooed and dried fully before going back in to avoid odors.
7. Glass last
Clean the inside of every window with a dedicated glass cleaner and two towels: one to clean, one to buff dry. Do the inside of the windshield last, since it collects residue from everything else.
How often
A quick version every couple of weeks and a full interior clean every three to four months keeps most cars fresh. Heavier use, kids and pets may need more.
If stains or odors keep coming back, the problem is usually below the surface, which is where professional steam and extraction help.
