How to Clean a Suede or Alcantara Steering Wheel

Alcantara turns shiny and matted from hand oils. How to clean it gently and bring back the soft nap without damaging the material.

Performance car interior with Alcantara steering wheel

Alcantara and suede-like materials feel great and give a sporty look, but they show wear quickly. The fibers mat down and turn shiny where your hands rest, mostly from skin oils, lotion and sweat. The fix is regular, gentle cleaning.

What not to do

  • Do not soak the material. Excess liquid can damage the backing and leave water marks.
  • Do not use leather cleaner or conditioner; it is a different material.
  • Do not scrub hard with a stiff brush, which can pill the fibers.

What you need

A cleaner made for Alcantara or a gentle, diluted interior cleaner, a soft detailing brush, and a couple of clean microfiber towels.

Step by step

  1. Brush the surface lightly to lift loose dirt and raise the nap.
  2. Spray the cleaner onto a microfiber towel, not directly onto the wheel.
  3. Gently wipe a small section, letting the towel pull oils out of the fibers.
  4. Agitate very lightly with a soft brush if needed, then wipe again with a clean, dry area of the towel.
  5. Let it dry fully, then brush gently in one direction to restore the soft, even texture.

How often

On a daily driver, a light clean every few weeks prevents heavy matting. Once oils build up for months, it takes more work to bring the nap back.

Prevention

Clean hands make a big difference. Avoid driving right after applying lotion or sunscreen if you can.

The same method works for Alcantara headliners, seat inserts and door panels. If the material is already badly matted, professional cleaning can often restore much of the original feel.
